I am not a cricket tragic, but since I was staying in Adelaide I wanted to visit the Bradman collection at the Adelaide Oval to see what it was all about. Thinking it would be extremely busy, I went as soon as it opened and was actually the only one there. It wasn’t a huge problem waiting for it to open the doors to the visitor centre.
There is however no photography allowed within the Bradman collection, but you can take pictures of the rest of the visitors centre that has a little history on the Adelaide Oval. They have examples of the soil used on the oval, which isn’t just turf on the surface, but includes several layers including drainage gravel. The Adelaide oval wasn’t just for sporting events like the cricket, but included other events like Air raid shelter demonstrations, rock concerts and royal visits.
(I took notes on my phone if you were wondering)
The Bradman Collection is all about Donald Bradman one of Australia’s greatest cricketers. They tell his story and use some context to what was occurring in Australia around the same time like when he rose to fame during the depression of the 1930s, Mass media like the wireless and gramophone was developed. The launch of the ABC radio that broadcast the bodyline series in 1932 to 1933.
Cricket wasn’t the only thing he was involved with as there was tennis and played golf. He was the most written about figure in cricket history, and even wrote a song that was published. There are interviews about Bradman and with his wife too. Within the displays are some of his cricket bats and the gear he wore.
For the time I was wandering around the collection, I was the only one there. It was nice not to be stuck amongst people and just relax while looking around and taking my time. I wasn’t feeling rushed.
